From Uncle Tilo’s Clean Water to the Hawai’i Institute of Rainwater

In Hawaiʻi, rainwater catchment systems are considered essential household water infrastructure. Tens of thousands residents rely on these decentralized rainwater systems as their primary potable water source. Despite this reality, catchment systems remain vulnerable to water quality pollution, changing rainfall patterns, periods of drought, volcanic emissions, airborne contaminants, maintenance challenges and more.

Through nearly a decade of free community classes, consultations, hands-on support, and trusted products and services, Uncle Tilo’s Clean Water has provided those on catchment with tools and knowledge to become confident, sustainable Rainwater Harvesters.

Building on this important work, the Hawai’i Institute of Rainwater, a non-profit, will bring water catchment self-reliance training and practical knowledge to a new level. With the creation of clear educational resources, HIOR can train the next generation of field technicians and instructors, and deliver programs for households, daycares, businesses, and schools to safeguard clean rainwater into the future. HIOR bringing the right people together to meet vision with practical results for increasing access to clean and reliable water.

HB 1728 reflects a growing shift in how Hawaiʻi recognizes and approaches Rainwater Harvesting.

The Hawaiʻi Institute of Rainwater was established to turn Hawaiʻi’s Rainwater Harvesting challenges into coordinated action and lasting solutions.
